June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month: Could You Recognize the Signs?

When we think about elder abuse, many of us imagine it happens somewhere else, to someone else’s family. The reality is that millions of older adults experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, or isolation every year, and many suffer in silence.

As professionals, caregivers, family members, and community advocates, we all play a role in protecting our seniors.

Elder Abuse isn’t always physical. It can include emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment, or even social isolation. Sometimes the signs are subtle, a senior who suddenly withdraws from activities they once enjoyed, unexplained bruises, unpaid bills despite adequate income, or a noticeable change in mood or behavior.

The good news? Awareness makes a difference.

A simple conversation, a wellness check, or speaking up when something doesn’t seem right could help protect a vulnerable older adult.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Unexplained injuries or repeated accidents

  • Sudden financial changes or unusual banking activity

  • Poor hygiene or untreated medical conditions

  • Isolation from family, friends, or community activities

  • Fearfulness, anxiety, depression, or unusual behavior around a caregiver

What To Do If You Suspect Elder Abuse

  1. Check in with the older adult privately if possible.

  2. Document what you observe.

  3. Contact local Adult Protective Services (APS).

  4. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

  5. Reach out to trusted community resources for guidance and support.
